Housing here is mixed, so we stock for both kinds of subfloor.
Solid oak in strip through plank for nail-down installation over a wood subfloor, and engineered oak, walnut, and hickory for slabs, upper floors, and radiant heat, bonded or floated. Narrow strip widths are worth knowing about for the older bungalows, since they are what many original floors already are, and luxury vinyl and laminate are in the range where water or turnover is the bigger factor.

Installation

We check what is under the floor at the consultation, then specify to it.
A wood subfloor on a raised foundation opens up nail-down installation, and there is often an original strip oak floor already there worth looking at. A slab points to a bonded or floating engineered floor instead. Pull a floor vent and look at the edge, or lift a corner of carpet in a closet, and we will confirm it when we come out. Delivery, removal and haul-away of the old floor, underlayment, transitions, and trim are quoted with the wood.

Sanding takes a floor to bare wood and rebuilds the finish, clearing scratches, worn paths, tack strip holes, and old carpet marks. Screening and recoating is the lighter service, refreshing a worn finish without going to bare wood. Individual boards can be replaced and stain matched, and squeaks and loose boards refastened. How much sanding a floor has left is read at a vent or a threshold.

We install hardwood nosings, treads, and risers, cut to match the floor in species, stain, and sheen so the two read as one surface, or contrasted where the stair should stand on its own. Carpeted stairs can be converted to wood, and stairs are measured on the same visit as the floors. More on our stair work.

Small samples ship to your door free, which is the easy way to shortlist. Large sample boards come out with the in-home visit, several at a time, and stay with you. The full range is in the showroom. Do you supply the flooring or only install it?
Both. We supply it, deliver it, and install it, and the written estimate covers the wood and the work as separate lines.
How do I tell whether I have a slab or a wood subfloor?
Pull a floor vent and look at the edge, or lift a corner of carpet in a closet. Wood boards mean a wood subfloor. Concrete means a slab. We confirm it at the consultation either way.
There is carpet over my floors. Is there oak underneath?
In an older house here it is worth a look, and it is often in better condition than expected because the carpet protected it. Tack strip holes and staple marks sand out.
Should I refinish my floor or replace it?
Where the boards are sound and there is enough wood above the tongue, refinishing is usually the first thing to look at. Where there is not, we say so and recommend a new floor instead.
Do you install hardwood stairs as well as floors?
Yes. We install hardwood nosings, treads, and risers, matched to the floor, and we convert carpeted stairs to wood.
