Malibu

Malibu runs from the sand up into the canyons. We sell and install hardwood flooring in Malibu ourselves. Refinishing, repair, recoating, and hardwood stairs, too. Free samples by mail, or large boards brought out to the house.

Light oak hardwood flooring and a patio rug in a Malibu room

The hardwood we carry for the coast.

Engineered oak is what we stock most deeply here, and it is real wood on the surface.

Engineered boards are milled from a hardwood wear layer over a cross-layered core, which holds its shape as the air around it changes, and they can be bonded to a slab or floated over an underlayment. We carry them in strip through wide-plank widths, in oak, walnut, and hickory, with wear layers thick enough to be sanded and refinished later. Solid hardwood is stocked too, for nail-down installation where the subfloor is wood and above grade.

Samples come to you either way, small ones free by mail and large boards brought out to the house or the job site.

Coastal hardwood flooring installation in Malibu.

Beach lots, hillside lots, and the canyon addresses between them.

Bonded, floated, or nailed down, matched to the subfloor you have. Delivery, removal and haul-away of the old floor, underlayment, transitions, thresholds, and trim are quoted with the wood, and access is planned with you in advance where a lot is tight or the parking is on the highway.

The finishes we offer.

Two families of finish, and both are available on the floors we sell.

A surface finish, in water-based or oil-modified polyurethane, sits on top of the wood as a film in matte through satin sheens. A hardwax oil finish penetrates the wood instead and leaves a low, natural surface that can be spot repaired in place. Prefinished boards arrive with their coats already cured, and site-finished floors are stained and coated in the house, which is what allows a custom color.

Tell us how the room gets used and we will bring samples in both.

Refinishing, repair, and recoating.

Sun and sand take their toll on the surface, and the surface is what we rebuild.

Sanding to bare wood removes the color-shifted top layer along with the scratches, which brings a floor back to one even tone, outlines left by rugs and furniture included. Screening and recoating refreshes a worn finish without going to bare wood, and individual boards can be replaced and stain matched. On engineered floors the wear layer sets how much sanding is available, and we read it at the consultation.

Hardwood stairs, nosings, treads, and risers.

A house built up off a beach lot or into a hillside usually has more than one flight.

We install hardwood nosings, treads, and risers, cut to match the floor in species, stain, and sheen so the two read as one surface, or contrasted where the stair should stand on its own. Carpeted stairs can be converted to wood, and stairs are measured on the same visit as the floors. More on our stair work.

Samples, seen in Malibu light.

Light here is bright, reflected, and warmer late in the day, so wood is worth seeing in the room rather than on a screen.

Questions from Malibu homeowners

What we get asked most before a job here.

Do you bring samples out to Malibu?

Yes. Small samples ship to your door at no cost, and large boards come out to the house or the job site with the in-home visit.

Can a real wood floor go into a beach house?

Yes. Engineered hardwood is real wood over a cross-layered core, and the core holds its shape as the air around it changes. It sands and refinishes like wood.

Can wood go over my slab?

Engineered hardwood can, glued down or floated over an underlayment. Solid hardwood cannot go over a slab.

My floor has faded where a rug used to sit. Can you fix it?

Usually. Color shift from sunlight sits in the top layer, and sanding removes it along with the scratches, which brings the whole floor back to one tone.

Do you install hardwood stairs as well as floors?

Yes. We install hardwood nosings, treads, and risers, matched to the floor, and we convert carpeted stairs to wood.

Boards on your floor before you decide.

Large samples brought to the house, the rooms measured, and a written estimate to follow before any wood is ordered. Call or text (818) 917-7736.
