Solid hardwood is exactly that: each board is one piece of real wood, typically 3/4 inch thick — thick enough to be sanded and refinished many times across its life.
Why people choose it
It can be refinished to a new color decades later, it is the flooring buyers recognize as premium, and it genuinely adds resale value. We carry solid oak, walnut, hickory, and maple.
Strengths
- Refinish many times — a lifetime floor
- The strongest resale and prestige value
- Timeless, repairable board by board
- Natural, authentic grain and feel
Trade-offs
- Sensitive to moisture and humidity swings
- Best above grade on a wood subfloor
- Not ideal over concrete slab or radiant heat
- Needs careful acclimation before install
Where it works best
Solid hardwood is happiest above grade, over a wood subfloor, in living spaces and bedrooms. Over slab or near the coast, engineered hardwood is usually more reliable.
FAQ
Common questions
About solid hardwood.
How long does solid hardwood last?
Properly maintained, 50 to 100 years or more. Because it can be refinished many times, the same floor can be restored to look new across generations.
Can solid hardwood go over concrete?
It is not the ideal pairing — solid wood reacts to slab moisture. Over concrete or radiant heat we recommend engineered hardwood instead.
How many times can it be refinished?
A typical 3/4 inch solid floor can be sanded several times — often 4 to 7 — depending on how much wood is removed each time.
